Glass artisan Saburo truly knows his medium. Inspired by water, his Afumi collection glassware, named after the old word for “freshwater lake,” mosaics transparency with vibrant colours in striking patterns that cast beautiful shadows under the light. These small dishes — all handmade and unique — can accentuate a special dessert or simply be elegant trinket dishes.

Based in Yatsuomachi in Toyama, a prefecture famous for its glass production, Saburo focuses on tableware centerpieces inspired by Lake Biwa, a place close to its artisans Mitsuhiko and Yuki Nakata's hearts, and imbued with Japanese culture. Colors are developed after much experimentation, and all the works are kiln formed, involving a meticulous process of temperature controlled firing, sanding, moulding and re-firing.
