The Sanpu Sanyo Apron takes its inspiration from Japan’s maekake, a durable sailcloth apron historically used by 15th-century Japanese tradespeople and artisans. It keeps the traditional canvas front panel and woven wrap-around sanada himo cord belt, but adds pockets for tools, a front slit for easier movement, and hand-dyed tenugui (traditional cotton hand towel) side panels for wiping hands.

"Sanpu" means “three cloths,” with this beige tenugui pattern of three rectangles representing the trio of traditional textiles used to make the aprons. It’s perfect for gardening, cooking or any other activity that needs a little extra protection.

This short apron is also available in classic blue with a modern triangular pattern. We also have long versions perfect for gardening. To see them all, visit out Sanpu Sanyo Collection.

Sanpu Sanyo Aprons come from Kireya, a kimono store with over 100 years history of working with traditional Japanese textile artisans. It also specializes in tenugui design and is an advocate of finding new ways to use the cotton towels.
