Made by the Ohno Zuiryo kiln in Yamaguchi Prefecture, this drip glaze Hagi-Yaki Tea Set was a gift that its previous owner says she, sadly, never had the occasion to use. The side-handled yokode teapot and six cups each feature a creamy white glaze that drips from the top to form natural, organic patterning. At the base of each cup is a triangular notch known as a kiri-kodai — one of Hagi-yaki's iconic features.
Hagi-yaki is a rustic form of pottery that dates back to the 16th-century and embraces the natural imperfections of clay and its firing process. Detailed with an orange tinge where clay meets glaze, each piece of this set also has a purposely unglazed base to showcase the beauty of its soil. Handmade and individually glazed, no piece is the same.
