Delightfully named Shitoshito after the sound of gentle rain, the woven pattern of lines on one side of this Japanese cotton gauze blanket are like white streaks of rainfall against a blue sky. Flip the blanket over, and the lines are like blue raindrops in a white mist. The reversible Blanked Shitoshito is made of four layers of traditional Japanese gauze that get softer with every wash. Its playful woven pattern creates a quilted effect that keeps it fluffy and absorbent. Cozy for chilly nights but also lightweight enough for warmer weather, it’s a year-round comforter to brighten any room.

Blanked’s two other designs — the yellow Tonton and brown Zakuzaku are also playfully named after Japanese words. Tonton are circles of a tap tapping sound, and Zakuzaku’s rectangles are the crunch of walking on frosted ground. Visit our Blanked blanket series to see them all.

We are huge fans of Japanese gauze. Made of super thin layers of cotton, stitched together to trap air, its warm but breathable, hygienic and absorbent, and it gets softer and cozier with each wash. Blanked blankets are made by Nakamori Gauze in Mikawa, Aichi Prefecture, the birthplace of Japan’s cotton textile industry, and are woven and stitched together using techniques that date back to the Edo Period. Their outer layers are finely woven gauze, the inner ones of a thicker, airy weave. Every blanket is pre-washed in mineral water derived from nearby Mount Ishizuchi to ensure softness. They may rumple a little with washing, but that just adds to their beauty as they become even fluffier with use.
