Inspired by colourful pop-up books, the House Martin Pop-Up Vase series turns a 2-dimensional graphic design into a playful 3-dimensional artwork. They are bold and clever, each made from a single sheet of steel in Tsubame Sanjo, Japan’s center of traditional metalworking. Each sheet of metal is skillfully folded to push out a silhouette of a vessel, behind which is a hidden glass test tube to hold a sprig of blooms. There are three versions, this bright yellow Pitcher against a grey background, a soft pink Bottle with green background and a blue Carafe with off-white.
We love the simplicity behind this thoughtful idea. It’s fun but also so incredibly elegant. Visit our House Martin Collection to see them all.
House Martin is an up-and-coming design collective of three talented Japanese designers: Shigeyuki Sugi, Gensuke Kishi and Yukimasa Hirota. They have all collaborated with metalworking manufacturers in Tsubame Sanjo to produce minimalist and playful designs that thoughtfully showcase beauty and skilled craftsmanship behind Japanese metalware.
